FAQs

  • I am not sure of colour match do you send samples?

Yes. If you are not sure, it is always best to request a sample first., I send these free of charge. Please request through the contacts page.

Please note, I make my lampshades to order and cannot offer free returns or refund initial postage charges. Please see my returns and exchanges policy.

  • What is a diffuser?

This is a lampshade accessory, a flat, translucent polypropylene disc which slots into the bottom of CEILING PENDANT shades and sits on the lower rim.

It allows plenty of light through but hides the bulb, diffuses glare, and allows the eye to focus on the shade itself giving a smart, professional finish.

Particularly useful for high ceilings where the bulb is very visible and childrens nurseries.

NOT suitable for table /standard /floor lamps.

  • How long is your lead time?

Most of my lampshades are made to order, so the lead time can vary between 1-2 weeks ( 2-3 weeks for the applique shades) dependent on how busy I am and holidays etc (possibly longer in the run up to Christmas). Please allow for this when considering your order and do so early, if you can. Or contact me if your order is particularly urgent and I will see what I can do : )

  • Can you dispatch any quicker?

If I am not too busy, I will make every effort to dispatch sooner if I can.

  • I am not able to order the number of lampshades that I require, can you supply more?

Please contact me, I try not to over order on fabric stock. If it is a popular design/more available, I am quite prepared to order more fabric in, it just may mean a little longer lead time.

  • Do you have stock of any readymade lampshades?

I have a random selection of shades already made up. If you happen to choose one of these, I can dispatch more quickly.

  • Will your lampshades fit my lamp base?

They will fit British standard bayonet (BC) light fittings and have a removable adapter to enable use with a European (EC) fitting. If you require an adaptor to enable the shade to fit an American fitting, please contact me.

  • Whereabouts does the bulb sit within the shade?

The utility ring is fitted either at the top OR bottom of the shade (dependant on whether it is required for a ceiling pendant light or a lamp. The aperture through which the bulb goes is approximately 3.5cm within the shade.

  • What backing do you use for your lampshades?

I use a white, flame-retardant PVC liner, which has passed the Lighting Association glow wire test.

  • Is it possible to tilt these lampshades?

The position of the bulb holder is fixed and does not tilt.

  • Can you make me a shade of a different height to your standard sizes?

Yes, I cut all the panels myself, so it is not a problem to vary the size for you, however, custom heights are non-returnable unless faulty. Please contact me for a quote.

  • Can you make a shade with my fabric?

Yes, I can make shades with customers fabric, providing it is suitable - light to medium weight cotton/linen works best.

  • Do you make lampshades in shapes other than drum or cylinder?

I can make shades of straight empire (tapered) or coolie shape, there are many variations in size for these. Please contact me with your requirements for more information and a quote.

  • Can you make a shade larger than 40cm diameter?

Yes, I can make shades up to 55cm diameter (above that, there are carriage restrictions, however, you could collect if you are local). In general, for sizes larger than 40cm, it is necessary to use a wide width fabric, plain fabrics or patterns that can be turned sideways. Please contact me for a quote.

  • How do you package lampshades for carriage?

Shades will be wrapped in tissue and then well packaged in a strong enviro box with card/recycled paper/reused bubble wrap inner packing. Sent by courier, distanced ‘signed for’ service.

  • Which couriers do you use?

At my discretion, dependent on size/value/destination I use Hermes or Parcel Force, tracked and signed services. Usually 2-4 days delivery.

  • Do you accept returns?

I accept returns of standard size lampshades, not custom makes. Please be aware that the customer is responsible for returning the item unused and undamaged in its original packaging, with the inner packing used as it was sent originally, to hold the shade, well wrapped and secure within the box. Once I have received the returned item in good condition, I can make a refund for the item price. Unfortunately, I cannot refund original carriage charges nor pay for return postage.

Please check your requirements carefully before ordering and if you have any queries re size/orientation/colour/design, please contact me and I will be more than happy to help. If in doubt, please request a free fabric sample before placing your order.

  • What happens if my shade is damaged or lost in transit?

Loss in transit or damage is quite rare. I take care in packaging my shades really well. Should your parcel not arrive within expected timescales or be damaged, please contact me asap. In the case of damage, I will need photos of the packaging inside and out and of damage to the shade. I will replace where I can or refund if the fabric should be one that is discontinued.

  • Do you send internationally?

I’m afraid not, currently I only sell to the UK.

  • Do you sell your lampshades elsewhere?

I also sell my lampshades through Etsy @hawthornshades.etsy.com where some of the stock is the same but there are also more ‘one of a kind’ individual shades.

I occasionally stand at local craft markets within North Lincolnshire. To receive information about these please subscribe to my mailing list or follow me on Instagram.
